Unsafe abortion and sexual violence are deeply intertwined public health crises. When 4% of girls aged 15–19 face sexual violence from non-partners, we cannot treat reproductive health as merely a moral debate—it is a matter of safety, healthcare, and human rights.

NKHATA BAY YOUTHS CHALLENGED TO ADDRESS DRIVERS OF TEENAGE PREGNANCIES

Malawi Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Alliance Youth Coordinator, Mercy Nwachukwu, has challenged youth advocates in Nkhata Bay to address the root causes of teenage pregnancies and other sexual and reproductive health challenges by embracing the Gender Transformative Approach (GTA) in their programming.

Nwachukwu made the call on Wednesday during a day-long training held at Nkhata Bay District Council Chamber aimed at equipping youth advocates with knowledge and skills to counter misinformation and disinformation surrounding Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR).

According to Nwachukwu, youth advocates need to go beyond addressing symptoms and focus on underlying factors that perpetuate the challenges.

“To effectively address issues such as high teenage pregnancy rates, youth advocates must go beyond the symptoms and address the underlying root causes, including harmful gender norms, unequal power relations and barriers to information and services through the Gender Transformative Approach,” she said.

Nkhata Bay District Youth Officer, Youngson Ngwira, said although Comprehensive Sexuality Education programmes were introduced in the district a long time ago, progress has remained slow due to cultural barriers and negative attitudes towards CSE.

He expressed optimism that the trained youth advocates would help dispel misconceptions and promote accurate information on CSE across communities.

One of the participants, Erick Msiwa Banda who is also Executive Director of African Youth Empowered Initiative ( AYEI) described the training as an eye-opener and pledged to incorporate GTA and CSE in his organisation’s programming, saying the knowledge gained would help strengthen youth-focused interventions in the district.

Across borders, across communities, the message remains the same: sexual and reproductive health and rights are not a privilege but a right.

ANSA stands united across eight African countries to make that right a reality.

1 in 10. That’s not a statistic, that’s a girl missing school, her future interrupted, and that’s systemic inequality.

Menstrual health isn’t a taboo topic, it’s an education, health, and rights crisis. Let us join forces in breaking the cycle.
