Child Marriage is Stealing Childhood in Malawi!!!

With a prevalence rate of 38%, child marriage remains one of the most serious child rights violations in Malawi. Just this week, Kasungu and Mchinji districts reported approximately 5,000 and 4,100 teenage pregnancies respectively between January and June, highlighting the urgent need for action as these numbers are a largely a result of child marriage.

Today marks a new dawn for Malawi's children, especially girls, as the Government of Malawi, with support from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and UNICEF, launched the "Ending Child Marriage Initiative: Protecting Girls, Transforming Futures" at T/A Chimutu in Lilongwe. The five-year programme will be implemented in 10 districts with high child marriage rates.

Did you know? Child marriage is the 3rd leading cause of primary school dropout and the 2nd leading cause of secondary school dropout in Malawi.

A child is anyone below the age of 18, and child marriage is prohibited by law in Malawi.

Today, the Minister declared war against child marriage. Let us all join the fight to protect our children and ensure every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve her full potential.

Together, we can end child marriage by 2030.
