Lusungu Simba Mwakhwawa, the leader of the Federalism Institute, was recently featured on GBS tv where he discussed a number of issues, including the planned revolution of the shift from a unitary to a federal system of governance. He notes that Malawians are not simply victims of poor governance, but also of their own weaknesses. To address these issues, he suggests that a proper diagnosis is needed followed by appropriate action. Politicians take advantage of the weaknesses of Malawians, disrespecting, mistreating, exploiting, and disregarding them, knowing that they are weak. He thus calls on young people to take action and lead the way, as justice is only possible among equals.

Regarding LGBTI rights, Mwakhwawa suggests that the government, together with developmental partners, religious bodies, civil society organizations, and chiefs, should call for policy dialogues and discussions on this issue, looking objectively at both the symptoms and the root causes. He suggests that the focus should not only be on cultural and religious perspectives, but also on biological and human rights perspectives. While poverty may be a contributing factor to some individuals engaging in same-sex relationships, Mwakhwawa acknowledges that some individuals may be born bisexual, intersex, or transgender. He calls for religious bodies to focus their energy on real issues such as poverty, corruption, and unemployment, which make it difficult for poor individuals to make informed decisions.

It is important to note that views on LGBTI rights and decentralization of governance are complex and multifaceted, and there are a range of opinions on these issues. It is crucial for individuals and organizations to engage in constructive dialogue and debate in order to come to a nuanced understanding of these issues and to find ways to address them that are fair and just for all members of society.
