They also serve as an important indicator of ocean health when marine ecosystems are under pressure, Kirudhooni populations often feel the impact first.

Raivaru (ރައިވަރު) is one of the Maldives’ oldest oral traditions, where rhythm, repetition, and carefully arranged words carried history, values, and collective memory across generations.

More than poetry, it was a living archive—preserving knowledge through voice long before it existed on paper.

As we think about the future, protecting traditions like Raivaru reminds us that culture is not only found in monuments or museums. It lives in language, memory, and the stories we continue to tell.
