Have you ever coveted a fish species so much that you will go to the ends of the world to land one? The Papuan Black Bass (Lutjanus Goldiei) has always been that fish for me and I literally went to ends of the world and destroyed myself to land one. This first little one came after many lost fish, one right at the boat. The power of these fish is incredible, punching well above their weight. Imagine, this one took drag on a locked-down Tranx 400, with PE 10 mainline.

“If there’s one, there’s gotta be another 2 or three…” that’s what I told when another kaki pulled in a nice Golden Trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus). True enough, 30 minutes later, I had my own one, almost exactly the same size.

I was prepped for bonito so my setup was a PE 2 one with 30lb leader. There weren’t many bonito caught this morning but lots of different species of jacks. The jetty count for the morning was 2 goldens, 2 bluefins and 1 very fat rainbow runner.

As an angler and fish nerd, I can only speculate why this was the case but I’m pretty sure it’s due to the high volume of bait, especially small fusiliers. As with most jacks, the bite turned on well after sunrise and it was only a matter of whether we were able to keep them off the ledge. My leader was torn to shreds and was hanging on literally by a strand.

Typical to all goldens I’ve caught, this one gave me an extremely light bite that turned into a heavy, slow and dogged fight. I feel really thankful that I had just tied on a fresh leader because I saw some nicks from a bluefin fight earlier. Just goes to show folks, always make sure your gear is at its peak because the next cast might land you a catch of a lifetime.

Crap weather, great fishing! Nice cow Mahi-mahi on the VLF Popper 130g. The finish on the Pearl White with the chrome details is really exquisite and it’s really easy to work in choppy conditions. Thank you all for a fun trip out on the big blue. Lovely picture by .art

Scrolling through some of the old pics and found this gem. Flats fishing off an uninhabited island in Huvadhoo Atoll. I don’t think I’ve ever felt in touch with the sea than I did then.

Even as a Maldivian living in the Maldives, I do need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Male’ city. Don’t get me wrong. I love it. But it soothes my soul to be out in a place that you’re constantly bombarded by the noise of the city.

If you’re ever visiting the Maldives, I would always recommend to get away from the city and go as far north or south as possible.

I’d like to thank for showing and I the real beauty of Huvadhoo. We only spent a few days in the northern part of the atoll but Huvadhoo has left a lingering taste that beckons me.
