Friends of the Forest. Students from a local public school enjoy the masks of Cebus aequatorialis (CR) and Penelope ortoni (VU). Interacting with the masks is a key element for recall among the children who participated in the Chocó-Andina School Forestry Network program, whose objective is to improve the recognition of threatened species and their conservation. Fragile beginnings: A Burmese Roofed Turtle hatchling receives care to ensure a stronger future.
This photograph was taken in May 2022, capturing a hatchling Burmese Roofed Turtle (Batagur trivittata) receiving treatment for its umbilical wound during early post-hatching care. A caregiver carefully applies antiseptic solution to the healing area, ensuring proper recovery at this highly vulnerable stage of development.
Among the world’s most endangered freshwater turtles, the Burmese Roofed Turtle faces severe threats from habitat loss, egg harvesting, and illegal exploitation. Conservation efforts rely heavily on captive breeding and head-starting programs, where hatchlings are raised under controlled conditions until they are strong enough to survive in the wild.
Treatment of the umbilical wound is critical to prevent infection and support healthy growth during the early stages of life. This image highlights the precision and dedication behind ex-situ conservation where careful, hands-on care plays a vital role in giving this species a second chance at survival.
Location where the photo was taken – Burmese Roofed Turtle Breeding Facility, Linpha Village, Khamti Township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar.
