This month, we are starting our 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 series for children at MICAS, and the first workshop is just around the corner!

Join us on 18 July for ‘ 𝗠𝗘𝗟𝗔 – 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿’’. This workshop explores Reggie Burrows Hodges' distinctive use of colour, and layering and to encourage children to move beyond observation and express feeling, and atmosphere through art.

Mument li ddefinixxa l-karriera ta’ Reggie Burrows Hodges kien meta ltaqa’ għall-ewwel darba mal-pittura ta’ Wislow Homer 'Watching the Breakers: A High Sea'.

Kienet l-ambigwità ta’ dawk il-forom ta’ persuni bla wiċċ, lebsin ilbies skur li verament messitu. Fiha Hodges ra mod kif jista’ jipproġetta l-identità tiegħu permezz ta’ dawk il-forom.

Dan xpruna l-ħtieġa li joħroġ minn kif kien qed jesprimi ruħu sa dak iż-żmien u jsib il-mod ta’ espressjoni tiegħu, u dan wassal għall-użu tal-‘lingwa tal-isfond iswed.’ Billi biddel l-isfond abjad tradizzjonali ma’ wieħed iswed, huwa ħoloq lingwa viżiva li hija kollha kemm hi tiegħu.

A defining moment in Reggie Burrows Hodges's career came when he encountered Winslow Homer's painting Watching the Breakers: A High Sea.

It was the ambiguity of those faceless, dark-clothed figures that truly resonated with him. Hodges saw a way in, where he could project his own identity onto those forms.

This sparked a need to 'break out' and find his own mode of expression, which led to his iconic use of 'the language of the black ground.' By replacing the traditional white background with black, he built a visual language that is entirely his own.

𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 '𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖' 𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁.
