What is the Last Rite?
When should I ask the priest for the sacrament of the anointing of the Sick?

From the Code of Canon Law on the Anointing of the sick
Can. 1004 §1. The anointing of the sick can be administered to a member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.
§2. This sacrament can be repeated if the sick person, having recovered, again becomes gravely ill or if the condition becomes more grave during the same illness.
Note well: One does not need to wait until he/she is in the Intensive Care Unit or on his/her death bed request the anointing of the sick. Our hope is that the infirmed may know of the love and closeness of the Church and family members at the very beginning of sickness, weakness, or before a major surgery. We ask God that the sick may be healed and restored.
VIATICUM: Holy Communion as last Rite
The Book Pastoral Care for the Sick and Dying calls viaticum, that is reception of holy communion when death is imminent, as the LAST RITE. VIATICUM means, “with you on the way” it refers to the Eucharist as spiritual food for the journey to our hopeful homeland in heaven.
