The Strand Hotel Yangon

The Strand Hotel was built in 1901 by the Turkish-Armenian Contractor John Darwood in an ideal spot with its river view and convenient proximity to the jetty visitors disembarked. Soon after it was built, the hotel was an instant success and soon became the best-known hotel in Myanmar. It was remarkable for having electric lighting, made possible through an in-house generator while most of the city was lit only by candles and kerosene lamps. A French chef was hired to design a menu of European specialties. The finest ingredients were sailed in from around the world. The hotel was overhauled in 1927 with the concrete driveway and portico that still stands today was added in front of the building.

စထရင္းဟုိတယ္ကုိ ၁၉၀၁ ခုႏွစ္က တူရကီ-အာေမးနီးယန္းလူမ်ဳိး ကန္ထ႐ုိက္တာ ဂၽြန္ ဒါဝုဒ္က ေဆာက္လုပ္ခဲ့ျခင္းျဖစ္ၿပီး ျမစ္ျပင္ကုိ မ်က္ႏွာစာျပဳကာ သေဘၤာဆိပ္တြင္ သေဘၤာဆုိက္ကပ္ကာ ဆင္းလာမည့္ ခရီးသည္မ်ားအတြက္လည္း မေဝးလွသည့္ေနရာေကာင္းတြင္ တည္ေဆာက္ခဲ့ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္။ ဟုိတယ္ေဆာက္လုပ္ဖြင့္လွစ္ၿပီးမၾကာမီပင္ တစ္ရွိန္ထုိးနာမည္ေက်ာ္ၾကား လာခဲ့ကာ ျမန္မာျပည္တြင္ လူသိအမ်ားဆုံးဟုိတယ္တစ္ခုလည္းျဖစ္လာခဲ့သည္။ ထုိေခတ္ထုိအခါက လူအမ်ားစုမွာ အလင္းေရာင္ရရွိရန္အတြက္ ဖေယာင္းတုိင္မ်ား၊ ေရနံဆီမီးအိမ္မ်ားကို အသုံးျပဳေနရခ်ိန္တြင္ ကုိယ္ပုိင္မီးစက္ကို အသုံးျပဳ၍ လွ်ပ္စစ္မီးရွိျခင္းတို႔ေၾကာင့္လည္း နာမည္ေက်ာ္သည္။ ဟုိတယ္အတြက္ ျပင္သစ္စားဖုိမွဴးတစ္ဦးကို ခန္႔အပ္ကာ ဥေရာပတုိက္သားမ်ားအတြက္ ဟင္းလ်ာစာရင္းကို အထူးစီမံခဲ့ၿပီး ကမၻာအႏွံ႔မွ အေကာင္းဆုံး ဟင္းခတ္အေမႊးအႀကိဳင္မ်ားကို သေဘၤာျဖင့္သယ္ေဆာင္အသုံးျပဳခဲ့သည္။ ဟုိတယ္ကုိ ၁၉၂၇ ခုႏွစ္တြင္ အလုံးစုံ ျပဳျပင္မြမ္းမံခဲ့ၿပီး ယေန႔တုိင္တည္ရွိေနဆဲျဖစ္သည့္ ေပၚတီကိုႏွင့္ ကြန္ကရစ္ခင္းလမ္းကုိ ထပ္မံထည့္သြင္းတည္ေဆာက္ခဲ့သည္။
