Welcome back to ! As our IGCSE students has finished their Extended Mathematics exam, and all the other students are going to sit for their exam soon, we wish you all the best of luck!!! 🍀🍀🍀For you guys to ease your mind a little bit, we would like to share 🔟 FUN and COOL facts about MATHEMATICS!

1. Do you know that forty is the ONLY number that is spelt in alphabetical order?

2. Likewise, there is also ONLY one number that is spelt in descending order, and it is no other than ONE!

3. FOUR is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number itself (4)!

4. -40 °C is equal to -40 °F. 🥶❄️❄️🥶

5. 2 and 5 are the only prime numbers that end in 2 or 5.

6. “Eleven plus two” can be arrange into “twelve plus one” and both their answer are equated to 13.

7. Do you also know there are 13 letters in both “eleven plus two” and “twelve plus one”?

8. In a room of 23 people there’s a 50% chance that at least two people have the same birthday. 🎂🎂🎂

9. If you shuffle a deck of cards ♣️♥️♠️♦️properly, it’s more than likely that the exact order of the cards you get has never been seen before in the whole history of the universe. This is because, every time you shuffle a deck of card, including the 4 jokers 🃏, you have 56 factorial (56 * 55* 54 * 53.... * 3 * 2 * 1) possible combination.

10. 73 is the 21st prime number and 37 (its mirror 🪞number) is the 12nd prime number (mirror 🪞of 21).

Welcome back from the holidays and it is time for that day of the week; !!! 🥁🥁🥁
For this week, we would like to talk about the topic of "Surds."

So first, what is surd?? ⁉️
Surds are basically the values in square roots that cannot be further simplified. KEY WORD here are "CANNOT BE FURTHER SIMPLIFIED." This means, roots such as root 1, root 4 cannot be categorized as surds.

Now that we understand what surd is all about, how can we solve them?
There are six fundamental concept:
1️⃣. Addition of surds
2️⃣. Subtraction of surds
3️⃣. Multiplication of surds
4️⃣. Division of surds
5️⃣. Rationalizing of surds
6️⃣. Conjugate of surds

For addition and subtraction, the rules are simple. ONLY SAME ROOTS of surds can be added and subtracted. For instance, surds with root 3 can only be added to or subtracted by surds with root 3. During the process, basically rules of addition and subtraction applied.

💡💡💡TIPS: You can basically see surds as an algebra.

For both multiplying and dividing, we have to see the whole number (number outside the surd) and surds as two separate entities. For example, 8 root 6 divided by 4 root 2 = 8/4 + root 6/ root 2 = 2 root 3.

Now, we are entering the unfamiliar territory of rationalizing of surds. Don't worry... this isn't as complicated as you might think. This simply means getting rid of the surd from the denomination of the fraction when exists. You can do this by multiplying the surd you want to get rid of with itself. As root 3 * root 3 simply means 3.

Last but not least, conjugate of surds. This is similar to rationalizing, but you use this when the denominator is in the form of "a + root b." To do this, you have to find the conjugate of the surd you want to get rid of. You may ask how to do that? It is simply to change the sign between the two variables. The conjugate of a surd "a + root b" is "a- root b".

🆘DO NOTE: For both rationalizing and conjugating, you cannot just multiply the denominator. You cannot forget about the numerator.

Now, try to find it out would the denominator be after conjugating?
