★Why do Japanese like wearing a mask? ★
COVID-19 has affected on our habit and life style immensely. One of the biggest changes is that many people get the habit to wear mask. However, actually, in Japan, it was not rare to see people wearing mask in public on a daily basis even before its pandemic.
For example, in Winter, you see many Japanese wearing a mask because the risk to get infected by flu is relatively high. In Spring season, you see some people waring mask to protect themselves from hay fever, which is incredibly intense in Japan compared to other countries. Some women put on mask to cover up the faces when they leave a house without makeup. Or even, there are some people wear a mask as a fashion style.
One can argue it’s a culture that Japanese are shy and comfortable hiding their facial expression. You might noticed Japanese people cover up their mouth while laughing. Japanese people use emoji as “^^” oppose to “:D” with mouth in English.
