The history of the Shwedagon Pagoda dates back to the time of the Buddha’s birth over 2,600 years ago.

Two merchant brothers, “Taputsa and Banlika,” received eight hairs from the Buddha and brought them back to Myanmar. When they tried to enshrine these hairs on the Singuttara Hill, they were helped by the gods to worship them.

Originally a small, modest pagoda, it was renovated by many kings over the centuries, including Queen Shin Saw Pu.

Queen Shin Saw Pu in particular donated her own weight of gold to the pagoda, which began shaping the Shwedagon Pagoda into its current form.

The diamond spire at the top of the pagoda is adorned with thousands of precious stones, including a 76-carat diamond, a wonder found nowhere else in the world.
