Located one and a half hour's drive south of Bagan is Salay, the religious hub of Central Myanmar. It is home to Yokesone monastery, where you will find abundant wood carvings dating from the 17th to 19th century, depicting scenes of the Jataka tales (the stories of Lord Buddha) and Ramayana legends.

A trip to the renowned UNESCO world heritage site of Bagan should include a visit to a lacquerware shop to see this unique artform and the techniques used to create these pieces. One of the ten main artforms in Myanmar, Lacquerware art, or ‘Pan-Yun’ uses bamboo and resin from the Thit-see tree. Each piece must have at least 7 layers of lacquer applied to be considered of good quality.

Did you know that The Strand Cruise has the shallowest hull or draft of all the cruises sailing over the Ayeyarwady? With a draft of 1.4 meters only, The Strand Cruise can seamlessly navigate the most shallow portion of the river between Mandalay and Bagan. This unique ability sets it apart from other cruise ships, especially during the dry season. Who would not want to enjoy the beautiful sights of the cruise for longer?
