❄️✨ Public Safety Reminder – Winter Roadway Awareness ✨❄️
As winter settles in and the Northern Lights continue to put on an incredible show, we’d like to share a friendly reminder with our community.
Salcha Fire & Rescue would like to remind the public to exercise increased caution on roadways during winter conditions, particularly during periods of heightened Northern Lights activity. While many people enjoy stopping to view or photograph the lights, doing so along roadways can create serious safety hazards.
Winter conditions can reduce visibility and increase stopping distances, making roadway safety especially important this time of year. Planning ahead and choosing safe locations to stop helps reduce risk for everyone.
Please remember:
• Always pull completely off the roadway if stopping to view or photograph the Northern Lights.
• Never stand or park in active travel lanes.
• Prepare for winter travel by carrying proper clothing, emergency supplies, and ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready.
We encourage everyone to enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty responsibly. Taking simple precautions and using good judgment helps keep our community safe throughout the winter season.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping keep our community safe. Stay warm and enjoy the lights safely! ❄️🌌

Tonight we got to put our new extrication tools, provided by the State of Alaska DOT putting it to use in a real-life scenario. With nearly two feet of snow around the vehicle, it was a great reminder of the challenges we face this time of year in Alaska. Training and operating in real conditions, topped off by watching the northern lights dance overhead, is one of the many reasons we’re proud to serve as first responders in the great state of Alaska.
Structure Fire – Salcha Area
At approximately 5:45 a.m., Salcha Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the area of Station 2. Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved barn fire.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately two hours, utilizing three apparatus and six fire personnel to contain and extinguish the fire. A mutual aid water tender was provided by North Star Fire Department.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to North Star Fire Department, all of our mutual aid partners, and members of the community who assisted by providing access, resources, and support during the incident. Your help and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
