Overpaying for hosting? Here's how to tell if your plan actually fits your business
Most small businesses in Europe are on the wrong hosting plan — and don't know it. Either they're paying for resources they never use, or they cut costs in the wrong place and end up paying more when something breaks.
Signs your plan doesn't fit:
📉 You DON'T HAVE ENOUGH resources if
- Your site slows down or crashes during sales, seasonal peaks, or ad campaigns — think Black Friday, Christmas, or summer sales
- Pages take longer than 3 seconds to load — EU users are particularly quick to leave; average bounce starts at 2.5s"
- You see 502 or 503 errors during busy hours
📈 You're OVERPAYING if:
- You're running a brochure site or blog on a €40–60/month VPS
- Your resource usage never exceeds 30%, even at peak times
- You're paying for a managed dedicated server but have no technical team to justify it
🎯 A simple European-market framework:
- Shared hosting → local business sites, blogs, small shops with steady traffic
- VPS → 1,000+ daily visitors, WooCommerce or Shopify alternatives, unstable traffic spikes
- Cloud hosting → scaling e-commerce, SaaS products, businesses operating across multiple EU markets
- Dedicated → high-compliance industries: fintech, healthtech, legal, where data sovereignty and uptime SLAs are non-negotiable
One more thing worth checking: if your hosting provider's data centres are outside the EU, you may have exposure under GDPR, especially relevant if you're handling customer data, payment info, or running a business in Germany, France, or the Nordics where enforcement is stricter.

Why website speed is a money issue not a tech issue
1 second of delay = −7% in conversions.
Not theory — data backed by studies from Vodafone, ASOS, and the European Commission's digital economy reports.
When you choose hosting based only on price, you pay twice: once for the plan, and again for every visitor who left before your page loaded.
What actually affects speed:
→ Disk type: NVMe SSD is 3–5× faster than standard SSD. Most budget hosts still run on old hardware
→ Server location: a data center in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Warsaw means 30–80ms less latency for European users. That's visible in real life
→ Server neighbors: on oversold shared hosting, one resource-heavy site affects everyone on the same machine
→ PHP version: PHP 8.x runs up to 2× faster than PHP 7.x, which many older hosts still use by default
→ GDPR & data residency: European-hosted infrastructure isn't just faster for your audience, it's also cleaner from a compliance standpoint
💡 Test your site on PageSpeed Insights right now.
Score below 70? The bottleneck is almost certainly your infrastructure, not your design or code.

Having backups and having backups that actually work are two different things. Make sure you know the difference.
30% of backups fail to restore correctly when it actually matters. Here's why.
A story everyone in web development has heard at least once:
"We had backups. But when the site went down, the last working one was 3 weeks old — and everything after that was empty files."
What you should check right now:
How often is the backup created? Daily is the bare minimum for any live website
Where is it stored? A backup on the same server isn't a backup — it's a false sense of security
How many versions are available? 7 days minimum, 30 is the standard worth paying for
Have you ever tested a restore? If not, you don't actually know if your backup works
Is it included in your plan? Or is it a paid add-on you never noticed?
⚠️ Recovering from a hack or data loss without working backups costs 10–50× more than hosting with proper protection built in.
A backup you've never tested is just a file with an optimistic name.
