We recently had a chat with Ralfs Braunfelds, a software developer at Nexpay. Read below to find out about his experience at Nexpay, how to be a successful software developer and what skills are important.

🧑‍💻 How did you come to Nexpay?

A close friend of mine was working at Nexpay, and his stories of the product and the team environment caught my attention. My whole journey as a software developer has been in the Fintech world, so the chance to further sharpen my skills while also exploring the crypto world resonated with me. Also, as a proud Latvian, the chance to help a company from the Baltics grow and expand internationally was the final push.

💡 What skills are important for this position?

Software developers tend to have a very specific way of dealing with issues in their lives. They get frustrated, but know how to harness it and fuel their motivation to fix them. A software developer will face annoying issues on a constant basis, so it is important to keep motivation up.

Paradoxically, a software developer must be very independent but also a team player. They need to be resourceful and quickly find solutions on their own (effective Googling is an underrated skill). Yet you need to remember that there are plenty of other developers working on the same code base, so communication and collaboration is key.

Lastly, I'd like to mention a skill that I rarely hear associated with software developers - creativity. Like designers use creativity when designing interfaces that are intuitive to end-users, software developers need to write code that is intuitive to other developers and easy to build on for future changes.

🔍 Advice on how to be successful in your position?

If you want to succeed as a software developer, my main suggestion is to become a jack-of-all-trades, but master of one. You should have a sub-field you are an expert in, but always keep an open mind and take every chance to learn about tech outside your comfort zone. I believe this is a characteristic that has given me an edge in many job interviews.

If you're a backend developer I urge you to take those frontend tasks now and then.

Time and experience should contribute to your clairvoyance and sense of code quality. A good software developer can anticipate how the product will likely change in the future and identify potential issues with design.

🚀 What do you like most about Nexpay?

The most redeeming quality is that Nexpay places a lot of trust in their developers. We have time to work on what we feel is important.

After only 6 months I'm already trusted with time to research and implement improvements I've suggested and work on the tasks I want to do.

🏃 Memorable experiences from your time in Nexpay?

I cherish all the wholesome conversations I had on the hike at the summer team-building event and I'll never forget that pole climbing activity.

Today is the global company culture day. Culture is important for companies because it has a profound impact on employee well-being, productivity, innovation, customer relationships, brand perception, and overall performance. A well-crafted and nurtured culture can be a strategic asset that sets a company apart.

Even though culture can be hard to define and pin down, at Nexpay we have defined our core values as:

🤝 Trust - trusting and being trustworthy in interactions both internally and externally
💪 Ownership - over our projects, actions and attitudes
🚀 Be daring - being ambitious, showing initiative, driving change and leading by example
⏰ Respecting time - being responsive, making quick decisions to move fast and create great things
🗣️ Maximizing transparency - communicating dynamically and constantly, making information available, and using data to drive our decisions.

Though we have the values defined and in use for some time, we recently started an initiative to bring these values to life in our daily interactions.
