Celebrating Our Rangelands, Honouring Our Herd 🐑⛰️
On 20 May 2026, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA), alongside partners and stakeholders, commemorated the International Day of Rangelands and Pastoralists, recognising the invaluable role played by herd boys and stock farmers in sustaining livelihoods, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience.
The event was attended by the Honourable Thabiso Mofosi, Minister of Forestry and Environment, underscoring the importance of collective action in protecting Lesotho’s rangelands and supporting pastoral communities.
Across Lesotho’s mountains, rangelands are more than grazing grounds. They are living ecosystems that sustain communities, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to food security for generations to come.
This commemoration served as a reminder that caring for our rangelands means caring for our future, while also honouring the resilience and knowledge of Basotho herd boys and pastoralists who continue to safeguard these landscapes every day.
At LHDA, we remain committed to supporting sustainable land management, environmental stewardship, and community wellbeing.
