The Local Government Director General, 'Mating Mahoana, has been dismissed from civil service following a disciplinary process initiated by the former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, Mpopo Tšoele.

The disciplinary hearing was instituted shortly before Tšoele was removed from office amid a fallout with the then Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, Lebona Lephema.

Sources familiar with the matter said Mahoana became defiant after being served with a show-cause letter by Tšoele, arguing that she was not answerable to him because they were of the same grade and enjoyed equal authority. Tšoele subsequently instituted disciplinary proceedings against her.

When the hearing commenced, Mahoana did not attend. Instead, she reportedly submitted a medical certificate to the Human Resources department rather than the chairperson of the disciplinary tribunal. The hearing therefore proceeded in her absence.

In a last-minute bid to halt the process, Mahoana rushed to court this morning on an ex parte application seeking an order barring the chairperson from delivering the verdict.

However, the court directed her to serve the respondents and return at 2pm, the same time the disciplinary tribunal had scheduled for the delivery of its ruling.

The verdict was consequently delivered this afternoon, resulting in Mahoana's dismissal.
