CEO Compensation: Rethinking pay in uderperforming economies
In most markets, CEO compensation is shaped by a mix of company performance and broader economic conditions. In Lesotho, however, executive salaries lag significantly behind those in economies like South Africa, Botswana and Kenya. (Note: SA, Botswana and Kenya are much bigger economies than Lesotho). Research indicates that CEO pay is more closely tied to company size than performance, with approximately 45% of the variation in CEO compensation explained by company size and only 5% by performance.
The issue is twofold for Lesotho CEOs: they are often underpaid compared to peers in similar sized organizations in South Africa, Botswana and Kenya, while their companies also underperform relative to these markets. The insight here? It’s time to shift the focus in Lesotho’s executive compensation structures toward performance based incentives. Companies can benefit from rewarding tangible achievements, aligning CEO incentives with sustainable growth, and creating a pathway to improved company results.
