🇱🇸 AGRIVEST LIVESTOCK & AGRIBUSINESS ADVISORY🇱🇸

Agriculture has the potential to become one of the largest employers in Lesotho — but only if we begin to structure and professionalise the sector.

A strong agricultural industry is not built by production alone.

It requires: ✅ Coordinated systems
✅ Professional expertise
✅ Functional value chains
✅ Innovation and technology
✅ Biosecurity and disease management
✅ Market integration
✅ Financial and logistical systems

Through AgriVest Livestock & Agribusiness Advisory, we continue advocating for an agricultural sector that moves beyond survival farming towards becoming a structured economic industry capable of driving employment, food security and sustainable development.

When agriculture is systemised:

productivity improves,

losses decrease,

disease outbreaks become easier to manage,

and opportunities expand for youth and entrepreneurs.

The future of Lesotho’s economy depends on how effectively we build systems around our productive sectors.

🌱 Agriculture must become a professional industry.

WHY BASOTHO FARMERS KEEP LOSING OUT

Without proper slaughterhouses, livestock farmers struggle to reach bigger markets.

By: ‘Mamoipone Mohlabana | MASERU

Livestock farming continues to feed families and support livelihoods across Lesotho, but many farmers are still losing out because of the country’s lack of functional abattoirs.

Voices like Tšeole Kojana, Lerato Basele, and Nkokoto Makhaketso say farmers are being forced to sell live animals cheaply while neighbouring countries profit from processing, packaging, and marketing meat products.

Without proper slaughterhouses, many Basotho farmers struggle to access bigger markets, meet health standards, and grow sustainable agribusinesses. Experts warn that the country is losing jobs, business opportunities, and valuable income that could strengthen rural economies and improve food security.

The call is growing louder that investment in modern meat-processing infrastructure is no longer just an agricultural issue but a national economic priority.

🐄🇱🇸 Why Structuring and Professionalising Agriculture Matters More Than Ever

The recent challenges posed by Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (L*D) have exposed a critical weakness in Lesotho’s agricultural sector: the lack of well-structured systems and professional coordination.

Without strong systems in place, it becomes difficult to:

• Monitor livestock movements effectively
• Enforce quarantine and movement restrictions
• Maintain accurate animal health records
• Regulate who is authorised to administer vaccines and antibiotics
• Ensure timely disease reporting
• Implement effective biosecurity measures
• Coordinate responses among farmers, veterinary officers, and authorities

As a result, disease outbreaks can spread more rapidly, causing significant economic losses for farmers and threatening national food security.

This is why the theme of the Lesotho Agricultural Symposium 2026 (LAS 2026) is so important:

Structuring, Systemising and Professionalising Agriculture for Employment, Food Security and Inclusivity

A well-structured agricultural system enables:

✅ Stronger disease surveillance and traceability
✅ Better veterinary oversight and compliance
✅ Improved farmer training and accountability
✅ More effective biosecurity practices
✅ Greater market confidence and export potential

Agriculture is not only about production. It is about building systems that protect farmers, livestock, consumers, and the national economy.

Now more than ever, Lesotho must invest in professional agricultural systems capable of responding effectively to emerging challenges and building a resilient agricultural future.
