KONOBO DISTRICT, GRAND GEDEH COUNTY – In a significant effort to strengthen women's economic independence and improve household livelihoods, the Representative of Konobo District, Hon. Marie G. Johnson, recently engaged market women and community leaders in an educational session on the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) model.
The awareness program, held in Konobo District, brought together women entrepreneurs, local leaders, and residents to learn about the benefits of community-based savings and lending systems. The initiative is part of Hon. Johnson’s broader commitment to empowering women and promoting sustainable economic development throughout the district.
Speaking during the session, Hon. Johnson emphasized the importance of equipping women with financial tools that can help them build stronger businesses, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to community growth.
The Village Savings and Loan Association model allows members to save small amounts of money regularly and pool their resources into a collective fund. Members can then access affordable loans to invest in businesses, farming activities, and other income-generating ventures.
According to Hon. Johnson, the program is designed not only to improve access to capital but also to foster financial discipline, trust, and unity among community members.
“When we empower our women, we empower the entire Konobo District,” Hon. Johnson said. “The Village Saving and Loan program is not just about money; it is about building trust, unity, and a future where every woman has the tools to succeed.”
Community members welcomed the initiative, describing it as a practical solution to the financial challenges many women face in rural communities. Participants expressed optimism that the VSLA model would help expand small businesses, increase household incomes, and improve access to education and healthcare for families.
The initiative reflects a growing effort to promote community-led development in Konobo District, where women continue to play a vital role in local economic activities. By encouraging savings, improving access to credit, and fostering self-reliance, the VSLA program is expected to contribute significantly to poverty reduction and sustainable development in the district.
As the program expands, many residents believe it will create new opportunities for women, strengthen families, and support long-term economic progress across Konobo District and beyond.
