CBL's Proposed L$79 Billion Currency Printing Still Under Review
The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has asked the National Legislature to approve the printing of L$79 billion in new Liberian dollar banknotes between 2026 and 2030.

Speaking before lawmakers, CBL Executive Governor Henry F. Saamoi explained that the proposal is intended to meet the country's growing cash demand, replace worn-out banknotes, strengthen foreign exchange reserves through a gold purchase program, and maintain enough Liberian dollar reserves. The plan also includes introducing a new L$2,000 banknote to make high-value transactions easier.

According to the CBL, L$14.7 billion would be printed in 2026 alone, with L$10 billion set aside for reserves and L$4.7 billion allocated to meet transaction demand.

However, the proposal has sparked debate in the Legislature. Several lawmakers, including Senators Amara Konneh and Abraham Darius Dillon, have expressed concern that approving such a large amount could increase inflation, weaken the Liberian dollar, and reduce citizens' purchasing power if not properly managed.

The Senate Joint Committees on Banking and Currency say they have not yet recommended approval, stressing that the proposal requires careful examination before any decision is made.
Governor Saamoi defended the request, arguing that the proposed amount is less than 40% of the current money supply and that the U.S. dollar continues to dominate many transactions across the country.

The proposal remains under legislative review, with lawmakers requesting additional details on costs, transparency, and implementation. The CBL estimates the project will cost approximately US$11.56 million, mainly to replace deteriorating banknotes printed between 2021 and 2024, which have an estimated lifespan of three to four years.

A final decision will be made after the Joint Committees submit their report to Plenary.
