July 4, 1776 | Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, is one of the most beautiful and important political documents in history. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration not only proclaimed American independence from Great Britain, it also enshrined Americans’ natural rights as the cornerstone of our republic. “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” Jefferson masterfully wrote, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

As part of the "Countdown to Freedom 250" monthly program series, American Corner Matara hosted “Voices of Revolution: Founding Documents and Ideals.”

Participants explored the foundational documents of the United States - the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights - and examined how these texts shaped enduring ideas of freedom, equality, and democratic governance.

Through interactive discussions, multimedia presentations, and activity-based learning, participants reflected on the lasting relevance of these principles and their influence on civic life even today. ✨
