Known locally as Dumbara, meaning mist-laden in Sinhala, and titled the Knuckles by the British for their skeletal geometry, the mountains around Santani offer the most profound high-altitude transition on the island.

The ascent begins in the structured rows of a tea estate before the trail breaks into the prehistoric stillness of the montane cloud forests, which are rare, high-altitude ecosystems defined by persistent cloud cover, high humidity, and low sunlight.
