Gears of War: E‑Day will take place entirely within a single city — Kalona — according to creative director Matt Searcy in a new GamesRadar+ interview. The Coalition says the decision was intentional, designed to make the prequel more intimate, emotional, and grounded than the broader, open‑ended structure of Gears 5.

Searcy explains that Emergence Day was a global catastrophe, but the studio wanted players to feel the human cost by focusing on one location. Kalona, named after a COG founder, becomes the emotional core of the story as players witness its history, people, and destruction over consecutive days.

Beyond narrative reasons, the team says a dense urban environment is also “the best gameplay playground for an intense cover‑based shooter like Gears,” allowing them to craft tighter encounters, more verticality, and more controlled pacing.

E‑Day is still scheduled for release in 2026 on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
