What is the best time of year to visit the island?
Sri Lanka is a year round destination as it is fortunate to have two monsoons that occur in different halves of the island at different times. So if you wish to enjoy the western and southern coastal resorts when the weather is best, come between December and April.

Is it possible to witness traditional festivals and Special Seasonal Events?
Every full moon day is a Buddhist public holiday, a poya. The most important is in May . Vesak Poya . a festival that marks the Buddha.s birth, enlightenment and death. Worth seeing are the illuminated pandals (bamboo frameworks), hung with pictures depicting events in the Buddha.s life. Sri Lanka.s most tourist-oriented traditional festival is the Kandy Esala Perahera, held in Kandy over 10 days in late July to early August. Perahera means .procession. and that.s exactly what occurs nightly - a magical passing-by of drummers, dancers, whip-crackers, acrobats and robed elephants. A caparisoned tusker carries the reason for the festival, the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha for the people to venerate.
Adam’s Peak Pilgrimage Season – December to May
Adam’s Peak or Sri Pada is an important pilgrim site. The devotees of many religions climb the mountain to invoke blessings. Buddhist believes the impression on the summit is the footprint of the Buddha. Sripada is the 4th highest mountain in Sri Lanka and it takes 4-5 hours to reach the peak by foot. The mountain is also named as Samanala Kanda or Butterfly Mountain. The area is rich in biodiversity and surrounded by the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary. The pilgrimage season runs from Unduwap Poya (December) to Vesak Poya Festival (May), reaching its peak mid-season at Medin Poya. At this time, there is a constant stream of pilgrims & the top can get very crowded. The busiest period is during January to February.
Sinhala Hindu New Year – 13th& 14th of April
Cultural anthropological history of the ‘Traditional New Year’ which is celebrated on month of April goes back to an ancient period in Sri Lankan history. Various beliefs, perhaps those associated with fertility of the harvest, gave birth to many rituals, customs, and ceremonies connected with the New Year. When the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere, Sri Lankans begin celebrating their New Year or “Aluth Avurudhu” (in Sinhala) and Puththandu (in Tamil).
It marks the end of the harvest season and also coincides with one of 2 instances when the sun is directly above Sri Lanka. Usually, the New Year is celebrated on 13th and 14th April (Bak) of every year. This month is considered as a prosperous period, since people live leisurely after harvesting.
Vesak Festival
Vesak is considered as both a religious and a cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in May. Vesak Day is one of the biggest days of the year in the Buddhist calendar and is celebrated by Buddhists all over the Island. Buddhists commemorate the important events that took place in the life of Lord Buddha on this Vesak Full Moon Poya Day. Many temples are filled with devotees and pilgrims all over Sri Lanka to mark this great event. In temples Buddhists worship, offer flowers, light lamps and burn incense.
These traditional observances, in essence, have their value in satisfying the religious and emotional needs of the people. As it is mainly a religious event, for devout Buddhists, religious observances form the main activities of the festival. On this holy day the Dana plays an important role. Every devotee gives alms. This is a sign of sharing with joy and peace with people. During the Vesak Festival week, the selling of alcohol and meat is usually prohibited, with abattoirs also being closed.
Poson Celebrations
On Poson Poya, the ancient capital, Anuradhapura, draws thousands of Buddhist pilgrims. The main center of celebration is in Mihintale. It is said the royal missionary monk Mahinda preached the first sermon to the ruling king Devanam Piyatissa on Poson Poya. The two rituals of pilgrimage and the observance of the Eight Precepts are combined here. Processions commemorative of the event, referred to as Mihindu Peraheras are held in various parts of the country. Mass religious observances, illuminations pageants are part of the celebrations.
Kandy Perahera (July / August)
The Kandy Esala Perahera is Sri Lanka’s grandest event, a fascinating parade of almost 100 caparisoned elephants, accompanied by dozens of drummers, dynamic Kandyan dancers, Whirling fire dancers, standard bearers, spinning jugglers, students and dignitaries dressed in the traditional, elaborate Kandyan costume. It is a kaleidoscopic spectacle witnessed by thousands who line the streets and watch in awe during the three hour long procession. The shimmering gold casket being carried by the most majestic elephant: the Maligawa Tusker.
The first five nights of the public Perahera are known as the “Kumbal”, while the final and most spectacular five nights are the “Randoli” Perahera. Diya Kapeema (The water cutting ceremony) is held on following early morning soon after the Final Randoli Perahera and the Esala Perahera ends with a Day Perahera which is held in the afternoon on the same day.
Whale and Dolphin Watching – Sri Lanka

Elephants Gathering at Minneriya – Sri Lanka

Being part of the elephant corridor which joins up with Kaudulla and Wasgomuwa parks, Minneriya National Park affords the opportunity to sight herds of Elephants throughout the year. August to October is the peak period to visit Minneriya National Park in view of the famous Gathering of the wild elephants. Gathering is the largest known meeting place of Asian Elephants in the world. During this period herds up to 300 elephants are seen at the 8,890 hectare park within a few square kilometers of the Minneriya Reservoir.In August and September each year during the dry season, wild elephants from the surrounding wilderness in search of food and water, makes their way to the shores of the Minneriya Reservoir adjoining the Minneriya National Park. Huge herd of elephants, sometimes numbering up to 300, converge together within a few square kilometers of the lake.
Nuwara Eliya Season of summer – From 1st of April to 30th April

How can I stay healthy in Sri Lanka?
With common sense precautions it is easy to stay healthy in Sri Lanka, which has good sanitation and health standards. Hospitals are generally good and especially in the capital you can have almost any procedure, including cosmetic surgery. Please remember that a fever in Sri Lanka should always be considered potentially serious and you should seek medical advice for this as quickly as possible. The first golden rule is never to drink tap water and to avoid ice and juices in places where they don.t use bottled water. Secondly, make sure you keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient amounts of safe, clean water, or king coconut juice which is a cheap, healthy alternative. Thirdly, be careful in the sun, which is very strong in Sri Lanka . especially from 10am to 3pm. Even sitting in the shade with sunscreen on will get you a healthy tan so treat our beautiful sunshine with care. Fourthly, do not pet or play with stray dogs because it is possible they may have rabies. Even if you are a dog lover at home, this is one time when it is better to avoid contact. Finally, and maybe most importantly, please ensure you have mosquito repellent with you at all times since prevention of mosquito borne disease is certainly better than cure. At dawn and dusk, malarial mosquitoes will come out, while during the day dengue mosquitoes will bite, so it is best to cover up with clothing or repellent when there are mosquitoes around
What is the ideal length of stay?

Sea temperature around Sri Lanka remains at 27° C, which makes the island an ideal location for wind-surfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, sailing, scuba-diving (including wreck-diving), snorkelling, speed-boating and banana-boating. What clothes should be worn?
In the intense heat of the low country, loose cotton skirts or trousers and tops, and a long sleeved blouse for visiting temples, are ideal for women. Men should wear cotton trousers or shorts and a T-shirt, or even the local sarong. Take a sunhat and sandals slippers or open shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Being a conservative society, especially in rural areas, very short skirts and shorts should be avoided.If you are to spend time in the hill country pack a light sweater, and if you intend to sample a nature trail, bring along a sturdy pair of walking shoes or trainers. If you are travelling with children, a sunhat, loose cotton shorts and tops, including long-sleeved tops to protect them from mosquito bites, will be needed
