Step into Thai Boulevard on Queens Road, Colombo — where warm timber tones, woven textures, and ambient lighting come together in a layered composition of texture and light, creating an atmosphere of quiet elegance. Led by Inushi Wanduragala alongside Pranavan Rockwood, with assistance from Kanchini Chandrasiri under the guidance of Archt. Philip Weeraratne, the space reflects a refined and contemporary Thai aesthetic.

From the patterned wood flooring to the handcrafted rattan seating and statement pendant lights casting intricate shadows overhead, every detail has been thoughtfully considered. Mural-lined walls add depth and narrative, transforming the dining area into an immersive experience that feels both intimate and elevated — a setting designed to slow you down and savour the moment.

Our sincere gratitude to Chamindri Wijemanne and Suranjith Fonseka for their trust and continued encouragement. As inspiring and motivating clients, they pushed us beyond our comfort zones and challenged us to think more boldly, allowing the design to evolve to its fullest potential.

Malaka has been part of PWA for many years, growing through hands-on experience, trust, and the freedom to learn by doing. Hailing from a simple background in Bentota, and without a formal education in architecture, he embraced the discipline through experience, learning to navigate its complexity and the expectations of sophisticated clients. PWA gave him the space to explore, adapt, and flourish, and he's made the most of every opportunity.

He leads by example, with a strong belief in the value of experience. This is reflected in the small, close-knit team he has built around him, where trust, collaboration, and shared purpose define their work.

PWA is shaped by individuals who lead with purpose and bring others forward, and Malaka’s contribution reflects the very best of that spirit.

Set within the storied walls of Galle Fort, The Merchant stands as a reimagined expression of heritage and modernity. Brought to life under the direction of Principal Archt. Philip Weeraratne, alongside Malaka Andradi , Interior Designer Inushi Wanduragala .w , and supported by Sanuka Fernando and Pranavan Rockwood , the restoration breathes new life into a colonial structure while maintaining its historic integrity.

Meticulous attention to detail has preserved the building’s timber craftsmanship, high ceilings, and shaded verandas—hallmarks of its timeless architecture. Within its walls, guests encounter a refined balance between history and contemporary comfort. Spacious, light-filled rooms exude understated luxury, while the serene courtyard offers a moment of calm amid the lively rhythm of Galle Fort.

The rooftop terrace opens to panoramic views of terracotta rooftops and the glimmering coastline, capturing the spirit of the fort’s enduring charm. More than a place to stay, The Merchant is designed as an experience—where the echoes of the past coexist harmoniously with the ease of the present, inviting every guest to pause, reflect, and connect with the living history of one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured landmarks.
