๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐น๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ด๐ฏ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ: Burst of late tries hands Trinity an emphatic win over Royal in the 01st Leg of the 80th Bradby Shield at the Royal College Sports Complex. It was a blockbuster showdown between the reigning League Champions, Trinity College, and Bradby Shield holders, Royal College. Trinity was fancied to tick this game too, as theyโve done against all their opponents this season, and remain unbeaten, while Royal were searching for a miracle to stop the marauding Lions from running away with the game and the Shield. However, Trinitians were given a torrid time by inspired Royalists during the first half. First, by holding Trinitians at bay without conceding any scores in the first quarter, and then taking a 3-0 lead through a penalty, Royal made their intentions clear: the Tuskers are here to give Trinity a good run. Trinitians finally broke the shackles, Kevin Weerakoon scored the first try of the match, which came after 30 minutes of play, and took the lead 7-3. Teams settled for Lemons, with Trinity leading 7-3, but Royal was the much happier side inside the dressing room. The second half started with Royal scoring a goal under the post, through a push over try by Senuja Ranasinghe, 10-7, and the Royalists are on the lead and setting their eyes on a shocking win. Royalists did enjoy the major share of the ball possession and also made many attempts to increase their score, while Trinity seemed rattled, especially at the breakdowns and set pieces. However, Trinityโs backline was superior, alert and made many line breaks. Trinity succeeded in breaching the Royal defence and scoring their 2nd try of the match with 15 minutes into the 02nd Half, where Minula Yaddehige scored in the corner, Trinity 14-Royal 10. Royalists were relentlessly putting pressure on the Trinity forwards with their pick and go tactics, while Trinity adapted to run the ball through their speedy and powerful backs. Royal stepped up their attack, but against the run of play, Royal fumbled near the Trinity goal line at the 55th minute of the game. Trinityโs Udan Wijekoon picked up the loose ball and staged a counterattack from their base, which ended up with a try by Hamza Abdeen in the far-left corner of the Royal goal line, to take a decisive lead, 19-10. Royalists desperately tried to narrow the gap, but they found the Lionโs defence was impenetrable. Then, after another 3 minutes, as if the floodgates were opened, Trinity crossed the line to score their 4th try of the game thanks to a charge down by Yaddehige, scored by Bilal Nazeer to lead by 26-10 and followed by another when Mathisha Jayasinghe powered his way to score the 5th and final try, 33-10. The referee blew the final whistle, handing Trinity the win and a 23 points 01st leg lead, leaving Royal with many more headaches to figure out their game plan for the 02nd leg in two weeks in Kandy.
