🇩🇪🤝🇱🇰 Strengthening Germany–Sri Lanka Cooperation in Higher Education and Research

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Arthur Rapp, the new Director of the DAAD India Regional Office, to the German Embassy on his first visit to Sri Lanka in this capacity. 🤝🌍

During the visit, Ambassador Dr. Felix Neumann, Mr. Rapp, and our teams exchanged ideas on how to further strengthen cooperation in higher education and research between Germany and Sri Lanka, creating more opportunities for students, researchers, and institutions in both countries. 📚✨

A special highlight of the visit was the opportunity to personally meet with the DAAD scholarship awardees, who have been awarded the prestigious DAAD scholarships for their upcoming studies and research in Germany, and to hand over their scholarship certificates. 🎓✨

This year’s recipients include two undergraduate students from University of Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka who received the University Summer Courses Scholarship (HSK) to study German Language; five working professionals who received the Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) scholarships pursuing studies in Field of Natural Sciences and one PhD candidate who received the DAAD Doctoral Programmes in Germany research in the Field of Microbiology.

These scholarships open doors to academic excellence, research collaboration, and new global opportunities in Germany 🇩🇪✨

As part of the Visitors’ Programme of the German Federal Foreign Office, Haridhu Abeygoonaratne was invited to take part in a themed trip to Germany 🇩🇪 on “Germany as a Technology and Business Hub,” following his nomination by the German Embassy. 🇱🇰

During the visit to Berlin, Dresden, and Hannover, participants explored how Germany is advancing in areas such as technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and digital transformation. The programme also provided opportunities to exchange ideas and gain insights into Germany’s business and innovation landscape.

As the Second Vice Chairman of Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM), Haridhu highlighted the growing opportunities for collaboration between Germany and Sri Lanka’s IT/BPM sectors:

“The ‘Germany as a Technology Hub’ programme has underscored a significant shift: AI is no longer experimental; it is being deployed at scale across various industries. For Sri Lanka’s IT/BPM industry, this shift presents a substantial opportunity. As Germany tackles talent shortages and accelerates digital transformation, the demand for trusted global technology partners is increasing.”

The themed trip was a valuable and successful experience that encouraged knowledge-sharing, new perspectives, and stronger ties between Germany and Sri Lanka in the fields of technology and innovation. 🇩🇪🇱🇰
