Nature Odyssey

When the sun rises over this beautiful Island it activates another day of wild chronicles around the National parks of Sri Lanka. One such beautiful yet less known park is the Wasgamuwa National park. Situated between Matale and Polonnaruwa districts, Wasgamuwa derives from “Walasa” – Sloth bear and “Gamuwa” which means wood in Sinhala. For its name’s sake, the Sri Lankan sloth bear and large herds of elephants could be spotted within this park. Located 225Kms from Colombo, Wasgamuwa National Park is bordered by River Mahaweli Ganga and River Amban Ganga in east and west. Apart from Sloth bears and Elephants, other wildlife includes Purple-faced langur monkeys, wild boar, sambar and spotted deer, buffaloes, and very rarely, leopards. Among the reptiles are water monitors, mugger crocodiles.

Of the 143 species of birds reported at Wasgamuwa National Park are endemic Red-faced malkoha and Ceylon jungle fowl are a common sight in the park. Among the bird populations are Sri Lanka Trogon, racket-tailed drongo, endemic yellow fronted barbet, endemic Sri Lanka spurfowl, white-necked stork, and lesser adjutant stork.

Located in the Deep Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, The Kumana National Park is a renowned bird sanctuary where a multitude of endemic and migratory bords breed. A paradise for Bird watchers and photographers, the Kumana National park tops the travel list of most wildlife enthusiasts. One of the most significant features of the park is the “Kumana Villu” – a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the “Kumbukkan Oya”. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds nest in May and June. Regular sightings include pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, heron, egrets, and little cormorants also, the very rare black-necked stork has been spotted here. Apart from the abundance of birdlife, Kumana is also home to elephants, leopards, Jackals, Wild Boar, and many more.
