The Esala Perahera: A gathering of master performers of the traditional Sri Lankan art
Kandy Esala Perahera features a host of Kandyan ‘Ves’ dancers who celebrate in their art, the devotion and veneration towards the Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Kandyan dancing style is held in high esteem and is closely associated with cultural pageantry. ‘Ves’ is the elaborate head-dress worn by the Kandyan dancer, after excelling in the art and being inducted as a master dancer following many years of training and learning. The early predecessors of the ‘Ves’ dancer is believed to have first appeared in the ritual ‘Kohomba Kankariya,’ dating back to the fifth century BCE. Kandyan dance style brings together the mastery of rhythmic movement, precision of posture and placement and balance and alignment of the body. ‘Vannam’ is the main manifestation of the Kandyan dance style, which is widely used in dance performance. ‘Vannam’ recreates the distinct mien and moves of animals, both mythical and real, and a few lore associated with gods and the bodhisattva. There are 18 ‘Vannam’ featured in Kandyan dance style.
