Octothorpe #

The famous ‘Hashtag’ actually has previous names such as ‘Number sign’ and ‘Pound sign’. It comes from the 14th century Latin abbreviation ‘lb’ or ‘pound weight’. The lb morphed into the #.

In the 1960s Bell Lab modified the telephone keypad and added this symbol to send information to the operating system. They called it octo-Thorpe combining the 8 edged nature of it and after the Norse word for field ‘Thorpe’ which concludes the meaning to ‘eight fields’...or in memory of Olympian Jim Thorpe by Bell lab employee Dan MacPherson.

We want to go with the Thorpe story because it makes us ponder why did Don MacPherson from Bell labs name it after an Olympian.
