Meetiyagoda is a small village in Southwest of Sri Lanka. It’s famous for Sri Lankan largest Moonstone mines. Meetiyagoda is situated 4km from Galle Road and 10 km north of Hikkaduwa.
Sri Lankan moonstones are of highest value due to their dark blue reflection. The finest and rarest moonstones have an almost transparent colorless body with a strong blue shine.
Moonstone deposits occur in the crystalline granite- know as pegmatite in magmatic rock deep below the surface, 10-40m. Moonstones are extracted by shaft mining. Meetiyagoda sits on the earth’s largest pegmatite vein of moonstones.
Moonstone is a semi precious gemstone and is a member of feldspar family-a combination of two spears- orthoclase and albite, stacked in thin alternating layers. When light falls through thin layers it scatters in many directions, creating a phenomenon known as “ adularescence”.
A visit to Meetiyagoda moonstone mines is worthwhile for a guest in Hikkaduwa.
