We recently published and launched Ceylon in 1907, a rare and evocative photographic record offering a window into Sri Lanka at the turn of the 20th century and marking a significant cultural milestone in reinterpreting the island’s past through a contemporary lens.

At its core is a remarkable collection of photographs captured in 1907 by Scottish artist Edward Atkinson Hornel during his travels across then Ceylon. Reframed through present-day scholarship, these images document everyday life, labour, ritual, and landscapes, revealing valuable insights into the island’s economic, social, and cultural history.

Authored by architect and conservationist Pali Wijeratne in collaboration with art historian Dr. Antonia Laurance Allen, 'Ceylon in 1907' is further strengthened by the research and insights of leading Sri Lankan scholars.

At Jetwing Hotels, heritage stewardship is integral to our hospitality, with each property telling a story that’s rooted in place, especially our restored hotels in Jaffna, Rambukkana, Galle, and the hill country. Supporting this publication continues our commitment to presenting Sri Lanka as a living heritage, not merely a destination.

📖 ‘Ceylon in 1907’ is now available for purchase at selected Jetwing Hotels.

Step back in time with a glimpse into the history of the Upper Bungalow of the Uva Ben Head Estate, Jetwing Hoffmann Bungalow. A defining chapter shaped by Sri Lanka's rich tea heritage and vibrant birdlife, set within the serene embrace of Welimada.

Originally built in the early 1940s, this charming tea-estate bungalow served as a wartime holiday home during World War II, owned by A. Baur & Co. (Pvt) Ltd. In 2022, Jetwing Hotels lovingly reimagined this timeless retreat, restoring its quiet elegance and authentic sense of place.

Named in honour of Thilo Hoffmann, former Chairman of A. Baur & Company, a passionate environmental conservationist and revered member of the Ceylon Bird Club, the bungalow’s name beautifully reflects its legacy as a sanctuary for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.

Today, Jetwing Hoffmann Bungalow rests serenely amid the rolling hills of Welimada, overlooking the vast, lush 100-acre private tea estate.
