Sometimes, the pH decreases, which means acidity of the rain water increases. This is due to an increase of sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, and nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere.
Sulphur dioxide is water soluble and forms H2SO3(sulphurous acid) with water. H2SO3 oxidises further to produce H2SO4( sulphuric acid).
Sulphuric acid is formed due to the dissolution of sulphur trioxide, too.
Nitrogen dioxide also helps in increasing the acidic nature of rain water. It forms nitric acid (HNO3) in water.
Water mixes with above acids to form acid rain.
Adverse effects of acid rain:-
* Destruction of forests and crops
* Destruction of aquatic organisms due to an increase in acidity in water.
* Dissolving of limestone and other rocks.
* Destruction of metallic buildings, statues, and other ruins.
