🍓🥬 Tasty Tuesday at the Saint Lucia Forensic Science Laboratory 🍓🥬
Day two of our Health & Wellness Week was all about fueling our bodies the delicious way! Our team members pulled together an impressive spread of fruits and vegetables, whipping up nutritious smoothies to enjoy throughout the day. It was a reminder that making healthy choices can be both a collaborative and flavourful experience.
The Mayo Clinic recommends at least 4 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables daily—and smoothies are a fun, refreshing way to achieve this goal. For forensic scientists, whose work demands intense focus and accuracy, fueling the body provides the brain power needed for a demanding day in the lab. Yesterday reminded us that wellness is not just about balance in the lab, but also balance in what we put on our plates (or in our cups)!🥤💚
Health & Wellness Week continues to highlight how small, mindful choices can make a big difference in balancing the rigours of forensic science with personal well-being.

🌿 Mindful Monday at the Saint Lucia Forensic Science Laboratory 🌿
We have kicked off our 2nd Annual Health & Wellness Week with a day dedicated to mental health awareness and self-care. Staff proudly wore green—a symbol of health awareness —while engaging in meditation sessions and soothing massages.
Balancing the demands of forensic science with personal well-being is at the heart of this initiative. Today reminded us that caring for the mind is just as important as the work we do in the lab. 💚
Stay tuned for more highlights as the week unfolds; each day brings new activities to support balance, resilience, and wellness.

🔬 Forensic Science Week Spotlight 🔬
Today, we are highlighting Tamara Sifflet-Henry, a Senior Forensic Scientist in the Forensic Chemistry Unit, whose favourite forensic procedure is the powerful technique of Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
Tamara’s work revolves around precision, and GC-MS is her go-to tool for unlocking the chemical secrets hidden in forensic evidence.
🔍 GC-MS combines two analytical methods:
Gas Chromatography (GC) separates complex mixtures into individual components.
Mass Spectrometry (MS) identifies each component based on its molecular fingerprint.
GC-MS is considered a gold standard in forensic chemistry due to its sensitivity and accuracy. Tamara’s expertise ensures that even the smallest chemical clues are not overlooked. Her dedication to forensic chemistry helps transform invisible compounds into compelling evidence—bringing clarity to complex cases and contributing to justice in criminal matters.
Let us celebrate Tamara’s contribution to the science behind the scenes! 👏

🔬 Forensic Science Week Spotlight 🔬
Today, we are proud to feature Joy Quinlan, our Deputy Director and a highly skilled Forensic Scientist specialising in DNA analysis. With years of experience and a sharp investigative mind, Joy’s favourite forensic procedure is the examination of physical evidence.
🧬 What makes this procedure so powerful?
The examination of physical evidence goes far beyond a simple visual check. It is a systematic and meticulous process of inspecting items recovered from a crime scene. The goal is to uncover samples that are crucial to a case but not always obvious at first glance.
🔍 Forensic scientists like Joy constantly ask:
What is this item?
How could it have gotten here?
What can it tell me about the events that took place?
It is this curiosity and keen observation that drives the search for context, prompting scientists to consider how each item fits into the larger narrative of a case, and it is often this process that leads to the breakthroughs that matter most.
Join us in celebrating Joy’s dedication to uncovering the truth, one piece of evidence at a time. 👏
