“Unfortunately, when many college students think about a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) they picture someone like ‘Doc’ Brown or Rick Sanchez: the lonely, eccentric scientist working late hours in the laboratory to uncover the mysteries of nature, without any heed for the practical value of doing so,” writes psychologist Ross E O’Hara. Research indicates that for many students—especially for women and those in minority groups—this archetype does not fit with their motivations, which tend to be more oriented toward helping people. But the research also suggests that by changing the stereotype, we can bolster students’ interest in STEM.⠀⠀
