Sursock Museum

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Sursock Museum presents a work from its permanent collection by Juliana Seraphim, Cheval de Nacre, 1974.

Born in Jaffa in 1934, Seraphim arrived in Lebanon as a young refugee and later studied painting in Beirut before continuing her training in Paris, Madrid, and Florence. Over time, she developed a distinctive visual language marked by surrealist imagery.

Throughout her work, the female figure appears in hybrid and dreamlike forms, often merging with vegetal, marine or architectural elements, reflecting themes of spirituality, imagination, and the inner worlds of women.

In the tragic moments Lebanon faces today, we take this moment to acknowledge the strength, creativity, and resilience of the women who continue to shape the creative life in our country.
بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للمرأة، يقدّم متحف سرسق عملاً من مجموعته الدائمة للفنانة جوليانا سرافيم بعنوان. Cheval de Nacre، 1974.

وُلدت سرافيم في يافا عام 1934، ووصلت إلى لبنان لاجئةً في سنّ مبكرة، حيث درست الرسم في بيروت قبل أن تتابع تدريبها في باريس ومدريد وفلورنسا. ومع مرور الوقت، طوّرت لغة بصرية مميّزة اتسمت بصورٍ متأثرة بالسريالية.

في أعمالها، تظهر الشخصية النسائية في أشكال هجينة وحلمية، غالباً ما تمتزج بالعناصر النباتية أو المعمارية، في انعكاسٍ لموضوعات الروحانية والخيال والعوالم الداخلية للمرأة.

وفي ظلّ الظروف الصعبة التي يمرّ بها لبنان اليوم، نتوقّف عند هذه المناسبة لنُحيّي قوّة النساء وإبداعهنّ وصمودهنّ.

Join us for a talk and book signing of Writing in the Work of Huguette Caland by Brigitte Caland on Wednesday , November 26 at 6:00 PM, in the Museum’s auditorium (B2), a conversation in french will take place between the author Brigitte Caland and Nayla Tamraz, art critic and writer.
Writing in the work of Huguette Caland explores the role of writing in the artistic practice of Huguette Caland (1931–2019). Through sketches, visual documentation and an essay by Brigitte Caland, a scholar and the daughter of the artist, this publication traces the Lebanese artist’s unique fusion of image and text. It also helps understand the role of writing in Huguette’s works, how by concealing parts she creates, consciously or unconsciously, a playful relationship with the viewer and how her handwritten fragments and invented symbols become a language of their own shifting at moments to abstraction.

‎يسبق حفل التوقيع حوار بين بريجيت كالان والناقدة الفنية والكاتبة نايلة تمرز.
‎يتناول الكتاب دور الكتابة في الممارسة الفنية التشكيلية لأوغيت كالان (1931 – 2019). يتتبع هذا الكتاب أثر المزج الفريد بين الصورة والنص لدى كالان من خلال الرسومات والوثائق البصرية، إضافة إلى مقالة للباحثة بريجيت كالان ابنة الفنانة. يساهم الكتاب في فهم دور الكتابة في أعمال أوغيت كالانء.

An honor to welcome the First Lady of Lebanon to the Sursock Museum. Together with members of the Board, the Director, and the Museum team, she toured the Divas exhibition, the permanent collection galleries, and the conservation storage. The visit ended in the Library and Archives, where a digitization campaign is bringing Lebanon’s artistic heritage to future generations through a consultable database . More future projects were discussed and how culture impacts the many industries in Lebanon . - شرف كبير أن نستقبل السيدة الأولى للجمهورية اللبنانية في متحف سرسق. رافقها خلال الزيارة عدد من أعضاء لجنة الأمناء، والمديرة، وفريق المتحف، حيث قامت بجولة في معرض ديفاز، وقاعات المجموعة الدائمة، ومخازن الحفظ والصون. اختُتمت الزيارة في المكتبة والأرشيف، حيث تُسهم حملة الرقمنة في نقل التراث الفني اللبناني إلى الأجيال القادمة. كما جرى خلال اللقاء مناقشة مشاريع مستقبلية وأثر الثقافة في مختلف القطاعات في لبنان.
