Rethinking Plagiarism in the Age of AI

Two Heads of Disciplines from CPS have published a research article in a Q1-ranked journal, placing it among the top 25% of academic journals worldwide in terms of research quality and impact.

The article, “Toward More Sustainable Plagiarism Policies in an AI Higher Education Environment: a Student-Informed Case Study,” authored by Dr. Alejandro Acuyo Cespedes and Elmira Tursunkhanova, explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping approaches to plagiarism in higher education.

Based on student focus groups, the study shows that AI tools such as ChatGPT are seen both as potential enablers of plagiarism and as legitimate learning aids. Students also point to a lack of clarity and consistency in current plagiarism policies.

The authors argue that sustainable academic integrity in an AI-driven environment requires more than prohibition. It calls for clearer guidance, AI literacy, and assessment practices that reflect contemporary learning realities.

Through this work, CPS faculty contribute to the evolving international discussion on academic integrity in higher education.
