FAIRNESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN CAYMAN GOVERNMENT.
In a small society, where relationships and familiarity run deep, these perceptions can become even more pronounced. Whether real or perceived, concerns about favoritism and unequal treatment must be acknowledged, because public trust depends on transparency and consistency.
The Cayman Islands is often portrayed as a safe and peaceful society, but the reality is more complex. Ms. Lovell Marriott Journalist with CAYMAN BREAKING NEWS expressed her concern for sincere growth within the Cayman Islands and point out some of the whole in the wall. Having lived here for over 35 years, I have witnessed both the strength of this community and the concerns that quietly affect everyday people.
The Cayman Islands is not crime-free. Beyond the rare headlines of violent crime, there are non-violent offenses—issues that impact ordinary residents—that do not always receive the same level of attention or urgency. Over time, this creates a growing perception within the community that not all matters are treated equally, and that fairness and accountability can sometimes feel out of reach.
For example, a doctor can abuse their authority—manipulate the system for financial gain, misdiagnose a patient—and the Cayman government step in to protect the doctor at any cost. Similarly, banks can remove money from a person’s account and, looking them in the eye, insist that the law allows it as long as the customer did not notice within the bank’s designated time frame. When this happens, police officers respond by saying the bank claims there is nothing to investigate and that explanation is accepted without question.
These examples illustrate a troubling pattern: when institutions are allowed to operate without accountability, ordinary residents are left vulnerable. The systems that are meant to protect citizens—the healthcare system, financial institutions, and law enforcement act in ways that favor those with power, authority, or connections. In such an environment, trust erodes, and fairness becomes a privilege rather than a right.
This pattern is not limited to isolated cases. Across Cayman, there are recurring situations where ordinary people—tenants, patients, customers—are left to navigate complex systems alone, with little recourse or protection from the Government. Without strong oversight, legal safeguards, or consistent enforcement, exploitation and abuse can persist unchecked, reinforcing the perception that some individuals and institutions are above the law.
Ultimately, fairness and accountability are not optional; they are the foundation of a functioning society. When citizens see injustice tolerated or ignored, it weakens the social fabric, undermines trust in institutions, and leaves communities exposed to harm. Addressing these systemic gaps openly and consistently is essential, not only to uphold justice, but to ensure that every resident can rely on the protections that should exist in a fair and equitable society.
Another pressing issue is the lack of strong rental laws to protect tenants. For years, this has remained a concern in the Cayman Islands, yet it continues to be overlooked. The absence of adequate protections leaves many tenants vulnerable, opening the door to exploitation and, in some cases, abuse. When there are no clear safeguards or effective enforcement, individuals and families can find themselves in unfair and difficult living conditions with limited recourse.
