유의정은 전통 도자의 물성과 현대적 감각을 교차시키며, 과거와 현재가 공존하는 새로운 조형 언어를 구축해온 작가다. 박물관의 한 장면을 연상시키는 신(新)백자 작업을 통해 장인의 숙련된 기술과 동시대 미술의 감각을 하나의 화면 안에 병치한다.

작가는 백자의 백색과 유약, 그리고 그 위에 얹힌 색과 이미지를 통해 시간의 층위를 드러낸다. 핑크 컬러와 청화 모란 등 전통적 상징 요소는 단순한 재현을 넘어 오늘날의 미적 감수성과 결합하며, 한국 현대미술의 확장된 가능성을 제시한다.

유의정의 작업은 전통을 답습하는 데 머무르지 않고 재해석을 통해 도자가 현대미술의 언어로 기능할 수 있음을 조용하지만 분명하게 보여준다.

Yoo Eui Jung is an artist who constructs a new sculptural language in which the materiality of traditional ceramics intersects with contemporary sensibility, allowing past and present to coexist. Through her New Baekja works—evocative of museum artifacts—she juxtaposes refined craftsmanship with the visual language of contemporary art within a single surface.

By working with the whiteness of porcelain, layers of glaze, and images and colors applied atop them, Yoo reveals stratified temporalities embedded in the work. Traditional motifs such as pink hues and blue-and-white peonies move beyond mere reproduction, merging with contemporary aesthetics to propose expanded possibilities within Korean contemporary art.

Rather than inheriting tradition in a linear sense, Yoo’s practice reinterprets it, quietly yet decisively demonstrating how ceramics can function as a language of contemporary art.
