Uposatha is a term in Sanskrit that refers to a day of observance in the lunar calendar, such as the days before the first, eighth, fifteenth, and twenty-third nights of the moon. These days were considered sacred before Buddhism, and early Buddhists adopted them. The Buddha taught that Uposatha days are for cleansing the mind and resulting in inner calm and joy.

As well as in the Theravada tradition, Uposatha refers to a weekly or bi-weekly gathering where monks reaffirm their commitment to the rules of discipline. These gatherings take place during the full moon and new moon, and include:
