Ruslan is a Kyrgyz eagle hunter from Bokonbaevo, a small village on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. He carries his eagle the way the men in this region have for centuries: with patience, with pride, and with the understanding that the relationship between hunter and bird is built over years, not days.

The eagle hunting tradition is one of the oldest forms of falconry in the world, practiced across the steppes and mountain valleys of Central Asia. The hunters are known as Berkutchi. The bond between a Berkutchi and his eagle begins when the bird is young, sometimes taken from the nest, and trained slowly, through trust rather than force.

Behind Ruslan, a traditional Kyrgyz felt carpet, a Shyrdak, its patterns carrying the visual language of a culture that has always known how to make beauty from what the land provides.

This is what belonging looks like. Rooted, proud, and entirely present.
