The planet Mars was once able to sustain liquid water on its surface. But not anymore. Why?

The Hope Probe, a new spacecraft launched this week by the United Arab Emirates, aims to find out.

Let start some small small revision seeing that schools are about to reopen, shall we!

Decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single (complex) compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds. These reactions may involve an energy source such as heat, light, or electricity that breaks apart the bonds of the compounds. Hence the reaction is usually endothermic as heat is required to break chemical bonds in the compound undergoing decomposition.... Absorption of energy causes the breaking of the bonds present in the reacting substance which decomposes to give the products.

Types Of Decomposition

1. Heat/thermal decomposition (thermolysis) mostly of salts

e.g. Decomposition of calcium carbonate: Calcium carbonate (lime stone) decomposes into calcium oxide (quick lime) and carbon dioxide when heated. Quick lime is the major constituent of cement.

2. Electrolytic Decomposition ( Electrolysis)

Electrolytic decomposition may result when electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of a compound. A good example is the electrolysis of water.

3. Photo Decomposition (Photolysis)

e.g
Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide: in the presence of light; hydrogen peroxide H2O2 decomposes into water and oxygen
