Setting up an Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya has serious effects on public health. Because of this, there must be public disclosure, public participation, or meaningful consultation with Kenyans.
But the William Ruto regime has not done this as it announces the set-up of a US-linked Ebola quarantine facility, at a time when the country does not have enough facilities to safely handle quarantine or treatment for people exposed to Ebola.
Already, a case brought by the Katiba Institute led to a court order halting the establishment of any Ebola quarantine, isolation, or treatment facility in Kenya. KHRC fully supports the petition.
Today, we demand that the Ruto regime share agreements, negotiations, safety checks, approvals, and operational protocols related to the US-linked facility. This was the message at today’s flash protest in Nairobi. Right now, the regime’s plans do not protect Kenyans’ rights to life and the highest attainable standard of health.
The Utumishi Girls Academy fire that claimed 16 lives is one of many school fires that have occurred in Kenya, leaving behind death, trauma, and unanswered questions. Time and again, regimes have reacted only after tragedy strikes, yet done little to prevent these foreseeable and preventable disaster.
