We’re onto the final day of the African Conference for Linear Infrastructure and Ecology, with today’s theme being “Applying Economic Tools and Finance for reducing Environmental Impacts”.
What does this mean?
There are several critical points in the life of a linear infrastructure (i.e. roads, rail powerlines etc.) project reliant on funds for securing effective mitigation of environmental impacts. Once a project has is approved, financing for mitigation is a critical determinant for positive ecological outcomes. However, the question in many projects is not whether there is sufficient finance for mitigation and ongoing monitoring, but rather how this finance is spent. Presentations today included how we can be more effective in planning a railway in Kenya through the design of roadkill smartphone apps to obtain wildlife road mortality data to assist us with our understanding.
Thank you to Africa Massive - Events & Travel Company for their logistical support, the presenters and attendees, the organising committee, and Dr Rodney van der Ree and Dr Faser Shilling for the donation of the prizes.
