When citizenM planned to open in NYC, some thought the concept might not work.
Most New York hotels use their luxury facilities (like saunas, gyms, restaurants) to attract travelers. Dutch hotel chain citizenM has none of these.
citizenM’s model of high-quality, low-price accommodation is made possible by cutting out services that certain travelers don’t consider important. Instead of offering something for everyone, they focus exclusively on mobile citizens. Their guests don’t need conference rooms or a concierge.
They decided not to change their value proposition for the expansion to New York. And today, the chain has found great success there - even without a gym.
citizenM is a perfect example of why you need to have a crystal clear value proposition - and stick to it. You don’t need to attract 100% of the market; you need to build a loyal following within your specific niche.
