Fifi Ruhara loved books. Her family built a foundation so that love could outlive her. A Swedish author sent 38 copies of his book to a school in Nairobi. Philanthropists flew across the world to deliver ten desks. None of this was inevitable. All of it began with one person deciding to show up.

NGO leaders don't have a choice. They have to start reinventing the way they handle human resources. Funding is steep, aid is dying and solutions have to be invented.

Ann Kobia the HR expert who works at The Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) has some important advice for leaders. Jobseekers who want to get into the NGO sector because they believe that there's money also have to know how to position themselves and make noise about what they do. In essence package their skill in a way that's unique and creative enough to show that you offer unique value.

It may be painful for NGO leaders to let go of talented people. But Ann says when you let go of talented people you get other equally talented staff if not even better.

Lastly, now hiring is project-based. It's not about getting many people and gloating that you have more than 700 staff members working for you. It's getting more tricky out here. Leaders have to be smart.
