Time for Real Devolution: Our Counties, Our Future
Friends, it’s time we ask ourselves: is devolution working the way it should for every county in Kenya? The promise was clear, bring government closer to the people, empower local decision-making, improve services, deliver equity. On one side, the Council of Governors has reminded us of the vital role of devolution and given tribute to Raila Odinga as a key champion of devolved governance. CoG has raised serious concerns: they say President Ruto’s recent remarks suggest the national government may be undermining county autonomy- something that could weaken the very foundation of devolution. The Standard
So, here are three questions each one of us should reflect on:
1. Are county governments truly empowered to plan, budget and deliver services without undue interference?
2. Is the national government showing respect for devolved units, or quietly centralizing power under the guise of ‘efficiency’?
3. Are citizens holding county-and-national leaders accountable so devolution delivers improved education, health, roads and jobs in your county?
Let’s push for a devolution that isn’t just in law, but in practice:
• Local voices shaping local priorities.
• County budgets transparent, inclusive, and focused on people.
• National and county governments collaborating—not competing—to serve the people.
Tag your county governor, send to your MCA, let your community know we’re watching. Devolution is not about politics alone; it’s about our everyday lives.

A Nation Mourns: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga (1945–2025)
Kenya mourns the passing of one of her greatest sons, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, our Second Prime Minister and an enduring symbol of courage, democracy, and unity.
From the struggle for multiparty democracy to the birth of the 2010 Constitution, Raila’s fingerprints are deeply etched on every chapter of our nation’s democratic journey. He stood fearlessly for justice, freedom, and shared governance- embodying the spirit of devolution, which remains one of his most transformative legacies to Kenya’s governance and equity framework.
As Prime Minister in the Grand Coalition Government, he worked hand-in-hand with President Mwai Kibaki to heal a nation torn apart, choosing peace over power and unity over division. His later service as AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development carried Kenya’s vision of progress to the continental stage.
Parliamentarians from across the political divide have remembered him as a reformer, patriot, and bridge-builder — a man who believed in women’s leadership, youth empowerment, and national dialogue.
Indeed, as many have said, “He was the best President Kenya never had- a teacher of courage, conviction, and compassion.”
Today, as his body lies in state and the nation prepares to lay him to rest at Bondo, we celebrate a life that will continue to inspire generations — a life that taught us that conviction and compassion can walk hand in hand.
Fare thee well, Baba. Your spirit lives on in the soul of this nation and the promise of devolution you so passionately championed.
