Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI)
The coordinated attack on the public budget forum at All Saints Cathedral is a direct assault on our civic space, and a terrifying preview of what awaits us in 2027 if political goonism isn't crushed now.
The total absence of arrests points clearly to state complicity and high-level political sponsorship. MUHURI demands that the Interior Ministry immediately dismantle these criminal networks. The state security organs must take full responsibility. We cannot sit quiet while politicians steer our nation toward chaos. We must stop this culture of state-backed thuggery in its tracks.

The battle for human rights is won or lost at the grassroots. Today, MUHURI was proud to stand in solidarity with our partners, Uhaki Na Usawa and IJM Kenya, for the official commissioning of the Changamwe Social Justice Centre in Kwahola.
For decades, MUHURI has championed the belief that true justice must be accessible right at the doorstep of the community. This newly launched space embodies that exact vision, serving as a sanctuary for civic education, human rights defense, and community-led accountability.
Our very own Khelef Khalifa joined leaders and reform champions including Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki, Kipevu MCA Hon. Leila Mughazo, Hussein Khalid (VOCAL Africa), Happy Olal (SJCWG), and representatives from IPOA and local administration.
We believe that real security and accountability begin when the community has the tools, the space, and the courage to demand their rights.
We congratulate Uhaki Na Usawa on this great milestone. We will continue to walk side-by-side with you, the Social Justice Centres Working Group, and all oversight bodies to ensure that the doors of justice remain wide open for everyone.

Yesterday in Garissa County, MUHURI engaged 30 young leaders from the Democratic Space Youth Hub under the Expanding Democratic Space Project, funded by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Nairobi Office.
The interactive session created a vibrant platform for youth-led discussions on civic space and the critical role young people can play in safeguarding and expanding democratic participation ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Key conversations focused on:
✅ Overcoming electoral challenges that hinder meaningful youth participation.
✅ Strengthening youth leadership and encouraging more young people to contest for elective positions.
✅ Mobilizing fellow youth to actively engage in governance and political processes.
✅ Building youth bargaining power and ensuring young voices are represented at decision-making tables.
The discussions reaffirmed that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the drivers of change today. By organizing, participating, and taking up leadership opportunities, youth can help build a more inclusive, accountable, and democratic society.
This UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime mini-documentary looks at Year Three of the PLEAD II programme in Kenya. Here at the Kenyan Coast, MUHURI has been taking these national justice reforms and putting them into practice.
This partnership means doing the actual groundwork like getting legal aid to inmates, training community paralegals who know their neighborhoods, and ensuring children can testify safely without being retraumatized.
Many thanks to the European Union in Kenya , UNODC, and UNDP Kenya for backing this work. Take a look at the video to see what localized, evidence-based justice looks like in action.
On May 26th, MUHURI convened a strategic dialogue on conflict sensitivity and human rights in Lamu. The session brought together youth, women, human rights defenders (HRDs), and journalists to address critical issues surrounding religious profiling and faith-based stereotypes. Participants explored actionable strategies for HRDs to counter these biases and enhance community protection mechanisms, while crucially prioritizing their own safety and security in the field.
